Graduate Intern (Advising) Job Description

About VCC: Viterbi Career Connections (VCC) supports engineering students in professional exploration and development, industry networking, and career exploration. Through a variety of events and programs, we bridge the gap between engineering students and employers. We collaborate with students to guide them through their job and internship search while assisting employers in engaging with top talent. Our signature programs, including the How to Get Hired Series, Viterbi Career & Internship Expos, Viterbi Trek, and Networking Events, attract thousands of students and industry leaders each year.

Position Overview: We’re looking for a graduate student who is excited to support their peers and gain hands-on experience in career services. This paid, in-person role (15–20 hours/week at $19/hour) involves advising students, supporting career events, and helping deliver programs that connect engineering students with opportunities.

You’ll build communication, advising, and project management skills while gaining hands-on experience and contributing to career development initiatives that support engineering students.

This position is in person. No remote option is available. The responsibilities below are subject to change based on VCC needs.  

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:  

Student Support & Career Advising (50%)

Career Advising

  • Meet with engineering students through drop-ins and appointments to support their career development. Sessions may be in-person or virtual. 
  • Provide guidance on resumes, cover letters, and key career topics such as internships, networking, interviewing, and evaluating offers.
  • Help students explore career options and connect them to relevant resources and opportunities. 

Workshops & Programming

  • Lead workshops on resumes, networking, and job/internship search strategies.
  • Design and lead your own career workshop or series during the year.
  • Collaborate with the VCC team to create and improve workshop content for both in-person and virtual formats.

Student Experience & Operations Management (20%)

  • Play a key role in shaping the student experience by overseeing front desk operations, advising flow, and appointment coordination.
  • Serve as a central hub for student support, connecting peers to relevant career resources and opportunities.
  • Coordinate logistics for employer-facing events and on-campus recruiting activities.
  • Support strategic operations through data tracking, system management, and internal coordination.

Event & Employer Support (15% ) 

  • Support the planning, promotion, and execution of career events.
  • Coordinate event logistics, student registration, and employer engagement for virtual and in-person programs.
  • Help create a positive experience for both students and employers.
  • Assist in managing opportunities and event details through Handshake.

Marketing & Outreach (15%) 

  • Help promote career opportunities and events to students through creative marketing strategies.
  • Develop content for the website, blog, and promotional materials to enhance student engagement.
  • Create and contribute to social media content, including photos and videos.
  • Engage directly with students by representing VCC at tabling events, class announcements, and campus outreach activities.

Qualifications

  • Work-study eligibility Preferred
  • Must be enrolled in a USC graduate program
  • M.Ed. students in Postsecondary Administration (PASA), Educational Counseling (EC), and School Counseling are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Experience in peer advising, mentoring, or student-facing roles preferred
  • Strong communication, project management, and customer service skills

Availability & Training

  • In-person position
  • Commitment to a full academic year
  • 13–18 hours per week
  • Must be available 2:00–3:30 pm for drop-in advising; occasional evening hours may be required; flexible to accommodate students' class schedules
  • Required August training prior to fall semester
     

Compensation  

  • $19.00 per hour 
  • Paid training provided 

Start Date & End Date 

The training for this position will begin in Summer 2026. Will continue through Fall 2026 with the opportunity to continue into Spring 2027 pending performance. Start & end dates will vary depending on intern availability.
