Los Angeles Mission College Career Center, Counseling Intern Position

 

The Career Center's mission is to provide students with career resources, job guidance, and support for those who are undecided about their major. We offer career assessments to help students make informed decisions about their career paths and major choices. These assessments help guide students toward selecting a major that aligns with their goals.

 

The Career Center is committed to helping students achieve their academic and career objectives, whether that means earning a certificate, graduating with an associate degree, or transferring to a four-year university.

 

Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Career Counselor/Coordinator, you will support the counselor by assisting with a range of paraprofessional counseling tasks, monitoring, in-and-out reach, guiding, and mentoring students. Administer career assessments for students who are undecided about their major. You will assist students in exploring careers and majors by guiding them through career assessments to identify their interests, values, goals, strengths, and personality type.

 

Duties will include revising resumes and cover letters, conducting mock interviews, assisting students to register for our online job board and conduct Job Ready and Career Information workshops.

 

The ideal candidate will be student-centered, have strong listening, organizational, presentation, and research skills, along with a proactive, responsible attitude and a passion for helping students to explore their academic, career, and major options. Applicants should be capable of working both remotely and in the office, handling frequent interruptions in a fast-paced, high-volume environment, and multi-tasking while maintaining a student friendly demeanor.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate career assessments for student and guide them in identifying their interest, personality, traits, values, major, educational and career goals.
  • Perform various office duties, including greeting students, addressing inquiries at the check-in counter, referring students to other departments or programs, scheduling appointments, answering phones, and taking messages.
  • Communicate with students via email and phone, providing follow-up as needed.
  • Manage our online job board, assisting both students and employers with registration.
  • Help coordinate and facilitate Job Ready workshops (Resume Writing, Interview Skills, Networking and LinkedIn) and Career Information Sessions.
  • Collect and maintain student information for follow-up purposes
  • Collaborate with Student Services and represent the Career Center at campus tabling and community events.
  • Promote Career Center services through classroom presentations.
  • Attend meetings and participate in training sessions.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities.
  • Assist the Career Counselor in coordinating special projects and events such as Job Fairs, and Major Fairs
  • Design and create materials for the Career Center, including flyers, handouts, brochures, etc.
  • Update the Career Center’s website and post job opening on social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

 

  • Create and update “Major Sheets” on Career Center website
  • Perform other office duties as assigned.

 

Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled full-time as an undergraduate student at an accredited university pursuing a Bachelor's degree, or hold a BA and be enrolled in a graduate program leading to a Master's degree in fields such as Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work (MSW), Career Development, or related areas. Prefer those with an interest in Counseling or Career Counseling.
  • Must be available to work 20-25 hours per week, within the hours of 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
  • Must have access to remote work technology, including a PC or Mac with audio and video capabilities.
  • Must be proficient or willing to learn Microsoft Word, Zoom, Cranium Café, Canva, Excel, Eureka Career Information System, PowerPoint, Publisher, Google Docs and other relevant technology and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.

 

 

Compensation:

This is a temporary position and contingent upon funding, pay rate approximately: $20.29 an hour
