Job Description
The LAVC General Counseling Department is interviewing Unclassified Paid Interns (UPI) starting in the Summer 2023 semester continuing through the 2023/2024 academic year. Successful Interns will work primarily at the Career/Transfer Center. The Unclassified Paid Intern (UPI) plays a critical role in the daily functioning of the Counseling Department and works with students directly. This unique position allows graduate students hands-on experience in the areas of academic and career advisement/counseling and overall functions of the Counseling Department.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide Career and Academic Pathway (CAP)
- Collaborate with designated Counseling CAP teams in providing follow up services to students
- Advise students on career and transfer processes
- Facilitate workshops on transfer and career topics (i.e., AB540, Common Application, CSU Application, Transfer 101, Probation, UC Application, Undecided Majors)
- Assist in the coordination and visit of representatives from different colleges and universities
- Help students navigate Career/Transfer Center resources and materials (including computer websites, software programs, and more)
- Collaborate on the planning of bus trips to four-year colleges and universities
- Administer, interpret, and score career assessments
- Participate in completing daily, weekly, and monthly office-related tasks related to assisting students, planning and marketing workshops and events, and student contact documentation
- Attend staff meetings
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications and Competencies
- Currently enrolled as a full-time graduate student in a counseling related program
- Maintain a 2.0 GPA and make satisfactory progress
- Available to work up to 20 hours a week with at least one evening shift
- Demonstrates the ability to express thoughts clearly, both orally and in writing
Desired Characteristics and Qualifications
- Ability to conduct workshops and make presentations
- Knowledge of the major career development theories and career development resources
- Ability to work effectively independently or cooperatively as part of a team and to carrying out multiple tasks or projects
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher
- Exercises sound and ethical and professional judgment when working with students, faculty and staff
- Being receptive to feedback, willing to learn, embracing continuous improvement
- Planning ahead, managing time well, and being on time
- Taking ownership and commitment to our work, doing what is needed without being asked, following through
- Flexible and adaptable to change and needs of the center
- Builds working relationships to solve problems
Special Notes
- Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units during each working semester
- Salary: $20.29 per hour
