Unclassified Paid Intern – Umoja Black Scholars Job Description

The Mosaic Village houses special programming funded by the Student Equity and Achievement Program, including the Umoja Black Scholars Program (UBS). We are seeking two dynamic and enthusiastic graduate counseling (or related eligible majors) students to join our team and assist with program efforts.

Selected Unclassified Interns (UPI) will have an annual assignment from August 2023 through June 2024 with potential to be extended depending on eligibility. UPIs will work within the Umoja Black Scholars Program and will be directed and supervised by the Umoja Counselor and Coordinator, Dr. Elliott Coney. UPI duties will be in support of office operations, various program needs, and student transitions related to the Umoja experience and culture.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time upper division or graduate student in counseling or a related field at an accredited four-year college or university. Related fields include rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family, and child counseling. Students may not be on academic probation or progress probation.
  • Knowledgeable of and sensitive to the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Mature, friendly, personable, energetic, and flexible.
  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Strong listening, leadership, organizational, and mentoring skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with designated Umoja Counseling team in providing follow-up services to students.
  • Assist with the coordination of visitation of representatives from various colleges and universities.
  • Work in partnership on planning of bus trips to four-year colleges and universities.
  • Participate in completing daily, weekly, and monthly office-related tasks related to assisting students, planning and marketing workshops and events, and student contact documentation
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs. (Desired)
  • Capacity to work effectively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Must be able to work three days for 15-20 hours per week throughout the academic year.
  • Must be able to work during the assigned weekdays and times in alignment with program needs.
  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA and make satisfactory progress in graduate studies.

Examples of Duties

  1. Monitor students’ program requirements, progress, and make referrals to other support services.
  2. Exercises sound and ethical and professional judgment when working with students, faculty and staff.
  3. Support students throughout their matriculation process, by helping them understand the importance of completing Assessment, the Online Student Orientation, and the First Semester Planning session requirements.
  4. Participate in /lead program and/or BSU meetings, workshops and other presentations in collaboration with program staff.
  5. Act as an informed referral source throughout the academic year, including accompanying students to various resources as needed.
  6. Taking ownership and commitment to our work, doing what is needed without being asked, following through.
  7. Support students in understanding the importance of academic program reports, receiving tutoring/mentoring, and attending workshops and campus events.
  8. Flexible and adaptable to change and needs of the Umoja Black Scholars village.
  9. Assist with maintaining detailed student contact logs.
  10. Assist with the coordination and implementation of events and workshops.
  11. Assist with marketing projects, including flyers, videos, workbooks, etc.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Compensation

The UPI is a temporary paid position contingent on funding, $20.29/hour.
