The Office of Student Accessibility Services (OSAS) is the USC department responsible for providing support and accommodations for students with disabilities. We serve undergraduate, graduate and professional students, as well as on-ground and on-line students in all programs of study. OSAS is part of the Division of Student Affairs, and while we are a separate department from other support, advocacy, and counseling departments, we work closely with these and other resources on campus to best support student needs.
OSAS is comprised of a staff made up of professional staff, as well as graduate student staff members. Graduate student staff are an essential component of our ability to serve and support students registered with our office. One of the roles graduate student staff fill in our office is that of Graduate Testing Assistant.
The role of the Graduate Testing Assistant has several essential requirements:
- Comfort and ability in communicating with students with a wide range of disabilities.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow established protocols.
- Effectively work in a busy environment with many interruptions and shifting priorities.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, as well as “ebbs and flows” in traffic.
- Possess strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to scribe legibly for students if needed, and ability to articulate clearly when serving as a reader for students, if needed (with or without reasonable accommodations).
- Promptness and reliability with work schedule/proctoring assignments.
- Proficiency with basic office software (Microsoft Office Suite), email (outlook), Zoom, Slack and internet.
- Professional judgement and appropriate action regarding confidential information, students in distress and issues of academic integrity. Maintaining FERPA standards and test security.
- Maintain appropriate professional behavior in dealing with faculty, administration, and staff, and provide courteous service to students and parents.
- Interact with confidential information, understand legal and ethical compliance issues within the office, possess and use discretion and good professional judgment, and thoughtfully represent both the concerns of the students we serve, as well as the concerns of the department, division and University.
General Responsibilities:
- Proctor individual and group exams in-person and/or remotely to ensure academic integrity.
- Serve as a reader or scribe for exams when needed.
- Assist with test preparation, check-in/check-out, and other related duties as needed.
- Schedule and oversee testing accommodations for students with disabilities.
- Oversee testing at off-site locations when necessary.
- Receive exam proctoring requests, exams, and other materials.
- Update information in OSAS database and maintain accurate records, access accommodation and student data via OSAS database and follow FERPA guidelines.
- Efficiently and accurately respond to inquiries (phone, email and in-person) based on policies and practices of the office. Screen and forward calls/messages and emails to appropriate staff. Make referrals to other campus offices as appropriate.
- General office work (coping, scanning, filing, phone calls, emails, records management)
- Front desk coverage at GFS and TC, e.g. for staff lunch breaks, as well as planned and unplanned Receptionist time off, meetings, or other commitments.
- May assist with notetaking services.
- May assist with Alt Text conversion assistance.
- Other projects as needed.
Schedule & Availability
- Accommodated testing occurs between the hours of 8:30am – 5:00pm, with the
exception of Finals Week. During Finals, testing occurs between 8:00am – 6:00pm
and includes Saturday. - Flexibility in scheduling to meet the needs of the office, including work shifts during
Finals Week. Finals may include evening and/or Saturday hours. - Student employment is reviewed on a semester-by-semester basis, based on the needs of the office.
- Up to 20hrs/week (ideally 15hr minimum), completed in 4-8 hour shifts. Preference for two full days and one half day schedule. Work shift may vary and be on-call/as needed in remote setting, based on the needs of the office.
Compensation
$17.00/hr
