USC Bovard Scholars helps high-achieving students with financial need gain admission to and succeed at the nation’s top universities. Students participate in a two-week residential program on USC’s campus and focus on four core areas: career exploration, admissions & financial aid guidance, test prep, and leadership development. Students receive subsequent one-on-one, remote support from Admissions Coaches in crafting personal statements and submitting their college applications. https://bovardscholars.usc.edu/.

 

The Resident Assistant Position

The USC Bovard Scholars Resident Assistants (RAs) are live-in student staff who serve as positive role-models, advisors, mediators, and event planners, organizing social events throughout the program. Each RA will be responsible for 10-12 high school students in the residential community. The ideal candidate will have previously worked in residential life or student affairs. 

 

Successful RAs demonstrate the ability to foster and develop community among students of diverse backgrounds; have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to counsel residents regarding problems or concerns; and provide resource and referral information as needed. RAs work closely with the Residential Coordinators to maintain the safety and general well-being of minors and enforce all university, campus housing, and Bovard Scholars program policies. RAs are resourceful leaders who are familiar with USC student support services on campus, including student health center, cultural communities, DPS, etc. The RA position also requires maturity, integrity, excellent judgment, attention to detail, a good sense of humor, creativity, and positive energy.

 

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Prior experience working with high school students, summer programs, and/ or residential programs. 
  • Prior experience coordinating social activities and events, involvement in campus-wide processes such as residential move-in, move-out, and welcome events.
  • Friendly demeanor and helpful attitude.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to remain patient and professional during stressful situations.
  • Ability to work responsibly with or without direct supervision.

Responsibilities and Expectations

  • RAs are live-in, full-time staff, RAs are expected to be available during the duration of the program, Tuesday, July 21 – Sunday, August 4, 2024, for the scheduling of on-call and on-duty work shifts
    • On-Call: When students are in class, there is limited flexibility with other commitments. RAs are on-call and expected to be no more than 15 minutes, walking distance, from campus.
    • On-Duty: When classes are not in session, RAs are on-duty and there is no flexibility with other commitments. These times include weeknights and weekends.
  • Directly supervises a group of residential high school students in all activities. Chaperone student field trips, as assigned.
    • Enforces rules and regulations established for USC Bovard Scholars. Takes appropriate disciplinary action for minor infractions of rules. Uses own judgment to refer issues to the Residential Coordinator. Documents all infractions and reports them to the Residential Coordinator.
    • Assists students with personal, interpersonal, and academic issues directly or by connecting students to campus resources. Mediates conflicts between students and refers conflicts to the Residential Coordinator as appropriate.
    • Assists in maintaining a safe and secure residential and campus environment. Reports suspicious activities to campus police. Responds to emergencies and immediately reports emergencies to the Residential Coordinator.
    • Maintains confidential student records, including health and health insurance documents and disciplinary records. Follows federal and institutional guidelines for the maintenance of these records.
    • Works independently and as part of a team to develop, coordinate, and deliver activities for residential students.
  • Supports and enforces compliance with health and safety resources provided by the university and Los Angeles County officials in regard to COVID-19.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Work Schedule & Compensation

  • Mandatory staff training and development: Tuesday, July 16 – Saturday, July 20, 2024
  • Work Schedule: Sunday, July 21 – Sunday, August 4, 2024 
  • Compensation for the Resident Assistant position is $1,235.00 plus room and board for the duration of the job assignment.
